Extremely slow search speed

I have had TOR for a long time and although it could be a little slow sometimes, I now have a big issue. The one and only time I ever updated my TOR was about a month ago. I updated and immediately the speed dropped like a stone.

I can log on to the network very fast. When I use DUCK_DUCK_GO for a search it takes 27 minutes to get a result. When I use any other search engine it takes about 30 minutes between searches. Obviously, something is wrong.

I have tried all the tricks suggested online. I deleted and reinstalled seven times. Again, I read all the articles on things you can do to fix speeds and nothing has worked. Keep in mind that I never had an issue EVER until I updated the software.

Can someone please tell me what is going on?

The only failure vector can be the input or output. I assume you connect directly to the Tor network. Considering that cannot control the exit node, have you tried connecting using a bridge to rule out that your ISP is doing DPI and slowing down your connection?

Believe me, I have studied this and tried everything. Yes, I currently am trying a bridge. Keep in mind that nothing changed on my desktop. Same everything. Same provider. Again, no problem ever, until I updated.

  • Empty your trash to free up disk space.
  • Double check how much fee disk space you have. Your “hard drive” should have at least 10-15% free space.
  • Try another bridge.
  • Get the older version from your backups and try it, to see if it is faster. If you don’t have a backup of it, re-download the older version
  • If it’s a laptop try connecting somewhere else like a friend’s place, a library, an airport, coffee shop, etcetera.

27 minutes to get a response from any Internet site doesn’t make sense, the connection would time out long before that. Do you mean 27 seconds?

What OS are you using?

@Navychi4 which version of Tor Browser did you upgrade from and to? Also, how did you apply the update (if manually, where did you download the software from?) and have you disabled the auto update feature? As you’ve been using Tor Browser a long time you should have been prompted to update with each new release otherwise. What is your OS? And finally when you say “I can log on to the network” are you referring to making a connection to the Tor network or something else?

Have your tried downgrading to the last known ‘good’ version to see if the problem persists? Do you have another device you can try Tor Browser on to check the problem is not device-specific?

I can reach the TOR network very quickly. It’s only searches that are slow. Yesterday it was 1 1/2 hours between searches.

I have no idea what the old or new version is. One day I noticed an “update available” in the upper right hand corner after I was already in the TOR browser. I simply clicked the update and ever since then, nothing!

I use Windows 10.

I have not tried to go back to the old version. I don’t know how to do that.

@Navychi4 did you try another device (e.g. laptop) with Tor Browser in your present location or try another location with your defective device, as @abc suggested? What result do you get from an internet speed test with Tor Browser - e.g. at speedtest.net compared to the result you get with a regular browser on your machine?

I’d think it highly unlikely the issue is with a particular version of Tor Browser, as no one else has reported this issue after an upgrade. Nevertheless if you have tried everything else and want to rule it out, you can install the previously ‘good’ version that was working for you by doing the following. Note that the following is for ruling out a problem with the latest version only. You will always want to run the latest version of TB for security reasons as it includes bug fixes:

*You can get the current version number by clicking on the ‘hamburger’ menu (screen top right, three horizontal bars) and selecting Help/About Tor Browser.
*Once you have the version number you can determine the previous version number (e.g. 14.0.6) from the distribution archive here.
*To install a previous version these instructions should act as your guide, except you’ll need to replace the leading part of each URL (https://dist.torproject.org) with https://archive.torproject.org/tor-package-archive. The reason for this is that the regular distribution site (dist.torproject.org) links to current releases only. For example, the .exe file for version 14.0.6 is at https://archive.torproject.org/tor-package-archive/torbrowser/14.0.6/tor-browser-windows-x86_64-portable-14.0.6.exe
*For testing purposes the first thing you’ll want to do when opening an old version of TB is disable auto update installs. Do this in General settings, Tor Browser Updates section by selecting “Check for updates but let you choose to install them”. When you are done testing select “Automatically install updates (recommended)” and Tor Browser will prompt you to install and upgrade to the latest version.
