Running Tor relay using Orbot on Android!?

Hey!

So, you might know that I have been running Snowflake Bridge (Kindness mode) on my Android TV via the Orbot app, sideloaded from F-Droid on my Android TV…

I was just scrolling and came across this option in settings which says Relaying.

What is it exactly? From the name, I assume it lets us run a Tor relay on an Android phone. Really? If that’s the case, why doesn’t Tor promote it more? And why isn’t there an option to view stats, like how many people are currently connected or how many were connected in the past, similar to what Kindness mode shows?

If it is what its name suggests, it’s awesome! But why does Orbot have a whole section (Kindness mode) for Snowflake with beautifully explained details, but nothing like that for Relaying???

(all imho)

Guess it is not used that much. In most scenarios you have to create a proper port-forwarding in your home-network or have a public IP on your mobile contract with a huge amount of traffic included. People doing/having/knowing this usually figure things out themselves…

Additionally a tor relay does not create this statistics you are talking about. It will only show you how much traffic was used and that’s it.

On the other hand, Snowflake works mostly out of the box and helps a lot of users in affected counties, so it’s reasonable to nudge people this way.

So with limited resources I hope the work on implementing webtunnel in Orbot is prioritized and not a nice to have feature…
