Does anybody have an overview who is affected by this problem? All people trying to access X through tor? Or are there exceptions? (E.g. certain exit nodes?) Does anybody reading this still manage to access X through tor? If so, what’s your secret?

I have never managed to get x.com to work via tor. Their onion, https://twitter3e4tixl4xyajtrzo62zg5vztmjuricljdp2c5kshju4avyoid.onion/, has not worked since forever. Elon Musk does not care about privacy and does not want you to be using tor to access the website. I consider it a lost cause.

Tor worked on Twitter and X without issues - then , all of a sudden, you could no longer view videos over Tor. Later, logging on became a chore requiring multiple attempts. Since April 11 all access seems blocked - you cannot even send support requests as they fail with a similar error message. X seems to have blocked all IP’s associated with Tor.

No, X.com still works with Tor including login. The issue seems to be caused by Tor Browser being in private browsing mode, as I could replicate the issue with Firefox + Tor in private browsing but not its normal mode.

If you turn off private browsing, you might as well logon to X.com using garden variety Firefox.

I turned off private browsing, but I still can’t log in. I tried various levels of permissivity (up to full recording of history and accepting all cookies), but I always get the famous “oops” message. Except turning off private browsing, is there anything else you did to enable log in to X via tor?

I don’t think, that’s correct: If you turn off private browsing your traffic is still routed through the tor network. It only means that somebody having access to your computer could also access your browsing history. (How much this is a breach to your privacy depends on your specific alternative settings.)

I’m not suggesting that as a solution obviously, just pointing out where the root cause might be.

For reproducibility: I used vanilla Firefox with some about:config privacy tweaks for the experiment and all traffic was routed through Tor thanks to Whonix.

I did my own “research” using brave’s tor privacy window: I can access twitter through the tor network and using a privacy mode window. This confirms: a) twitter is still accessible through the tor network, b) privacy mode doesn’t seem to be the problem. There seems to be a problem specifically linked to the tor-browser.

Thanks for the clarification. But do I understand it correctly: You didn’t manage to access twitter using the tor-browser, by turning of privacy mode, but a) you were able to access twitter using firefox routing your traffic through the tor network and b) you couldn’t do so when you enabled privacy mode. This is relevant information as it shows that twitter doesn’t block tor (thanks again!), but it unfortunately doesn’t show that it is possible to access twitter using the tor-browser. (Or how to do this.)

With the USA relays the X connection never occurs.

In all circuits, the link to the website https://www.arkoselabs.com/ never appears in NoScript, blocking the connection. And when it eventually appears, the user is allowed to make the connection. Otherwise, the login to X.com is not successful.

This sucks!

I have not posted on Twitter/X for this last month due to this issue. Does anyone have an alternative, maybe some other browser compatible with the Tor network?

Brave gives you the option to open private browsing sessions that additionally use tor. The feature is integrated and can easily be enabled. (This fact proves BTW and IMHO that the problem is specific to the tor browser. It would great if some developer could take up the issue!)

Thanks! That worked, I am switching to Brave, permanently. My feeling is similar to have been hacked then getting a new password, phew! I have to agree, the problem is limited to the Tor Browser (which may have or not been targeted by Twitter/X)
