Why did Tor browser do away with the perfer .onion over clearnet switch?

I remember a while back that in Tor security settings there used to be a switch to choose .onion websites over clearnet websites. If .onion services are more secure why did they remove the option to choose .onion links over clearnet websites? I always used this setting and now I have to wait for clearnet website to load and then choose “.onion available” and then wait for that to load as well.

Removal of automatic .onion site prioritization

The Tor Project has recently been notified of a potential fingerprinting vulnerability with automatic Onion-Location redirects. In an abundance of caution, we have removed the ‘prioritize .onion sites when known’ option from Tor Browser. We are looking further into this issue and will provide timely updates as more research and additional recommendations become available.

That is unfortunate. I really liked that feature but I understand if it was for safety reasons. I will just continue bookmarking the onion links manually.
