The keep the same identity guide instructs bridge operators to backup and restore their bridge line file (pt_state/
). Since from my understanding, bridges don’t have trust ratings (like the ramp up phases that relays have), what is the purpose of backing up the bridge line? What does the bridge line do in the background?
It doesn’t say backup the bridgeline but you have to backup it up to keep working with the same bridgeline.
For relays the traffic depends on your flags and bandwidth measurements. If you keep your keys you keep those (for some time). If you run a bridge the traffic is more dependent on how many users got your bridgeline from some distribution method and if your bridge works for them or gets censored. If you don’t keep your bridgeline the same those users can’t connect anymore and you have to wait til your new bridgeline gets distributed.
btw, do you know about the tor-relays chatroom on irc? Get in Touch | Tor Project | Support
That explains it clearly, thanks so much! I joined the Matrix room but it usually isn’t very busy and I tend to keep Element frozen anyway (so I may miss replies that come later). As for the IRC rooms, the registration process confused me.
