VPN before Tor: what features actually matter?

I’ve been reading different opinions about using a VPN before connecting to Tor, especially when the goal is to hide Tor usage from the ISP or to deal with restrictive networks.

One service I’ve been looking at is CometVPN.

From a Tor user’s perspective, what features of the VPN actually matter most in this setup? I’m thinking about kill switch behaviour, DNS handling, WireGuard/OpenVPN support, IPv6 leaks and whether the client allows clean routing or split tunneling.

I’m not asking whether a VPN is always necessary with Tor — I’m more interested in the technical side of what makes one provider more suitable than another when someone does choose to use VPN → Tor.

From what I know the only important features are the killswitch and IPv6 leak protection. Stuff like DNS is handled by Tor, while hosts file/NetShield have no effect since DNS is handled by Tor.

Also, if you want a recommendation than I recommend ProtonVPN. The free plan is surprising fast (however Tor does bottleneck it), and has good privacy.
