I’m using a de-Googled Android device. When I try Tor VPN, it crashes and shows the message: “enable Google Play Services”.
Does Tor VPN only work on phones with Google apps installed?
Can you walk me through how did you install the Tor VPN beta app? What version of Android is this? Which custom Android ROM?
A screenshot of the error will be super useful too!

I installed the Tor VPN beta app from Aurora store, My Android version is 15, and I’m running Lineage OS
@z733, can you try installing the latest version of Tor VPN beta (1.2.0Beta) and check if the issue persists? Following this link on the Aurora Store should work I believe.
Yes i have installed Tor VPN beta (1.2.0Beta), but the issue is still there
According to the bug report above, this issue doesn’t exist for Tor VPN debug builds downloaded directly from Gitlab package archive, and since you’re using LineageOS (which uses the userdebug build variant) you should be able to install debug builds directly without the adb install dance.
I agree though it shouldn’t require GMS to work even if it’s downloaded from aurora store (i.e. play store).

@z733 Though it has been said in the Google Play “about this app” section and gitlab project readme.md , it bears repeating that the Tor VPN app is not yet for high risk users or sensitive use cases during the beta period.
That, and the apks downloaded from GitLab are debug builds and are not supposed to be used in situations that matters. Debug builds contain extra components and codes that help with development and debugging, but on the other hand they do this by giving out internal runtime information (which shouldn’t happen on production applications) which might be dangerous if obtained by adversaries.
