[tor-project] intrigeri's report, September 2024

Hi,

In case you missed it, Tails is now part of Tor:

Time-off

···

========

This was as short work months: I took 2 weeks off for personal
reasons. I'm back.

User-visible

- I reviewed the doc sajolida wrote to mitigate SBAT-related boot
  failures

Tails cannot start with Secure Boot enabled on systems that require shim SBAT level 5 (#20471) · Issues · tails / tails · GitLab

- I gathered stats from bug reports to verify that our new idea
(credits: sajolida) makes sense wrt. reporting errors about the
partition table, partition header, and resizing. We plan to start
  designing and implementing in October.

  Follow-up on reporting GPT errors (#20505) · Issues · tails / tails · GitLab
Report earlier errors about the partition table, partition header, and resizing (#20531) · Issues · tails / tails · GitLab

- Always notify users of N.x that they should upgrade to (N+1).y

Always notify users of N.x that they should upgrade to (N+1).y (#20542) · Issues · tails / tails · GitLab

- Fixed recent(ish) regressions

  - Spurious error message on Tails sticks installed a long time ago
Spurious error message on Tails sticks installed a long time ago (#20519) · Issues · tails / tails · GitLab

Project and outreach

- I attended the Global Gathering, together with a lovely crew of Tor
  people.

- I helped a tiny bit with the messaging of the Tails/Tor
  merge announcement.

Team lead

Most of my time left was used to set up new processes, integrating
with the other Tor teams.

Cheers,

Hi,

User-visible

···

============

- Released Tails 6.8.1 (emergency) and 6.9 (on schedule)

For the latter, I've been running an experiment, tweaking
our release schedule in order to release soon(er) after
  Firefox and Tor Browser:
Release Tails soon after Tor Browser and Firefox (#20528) · Issues · tails / tails · GitLab

- Hopefully fixed a race condition that caused Upgrader failures

Tails Upgrader failed despite successfully downloading the IUK (#20593) · Issues · tails / tails · GitLab

User-invisible

My focus in October was: KTLO, streamlining processes, removing
busywork, and making stuff clearer, more robust & more predictable.

Accounting

We've been making good progress on transitioning away from the former
Tails fiscal sponsorship arrangements into Tails' new nest, the Tor
project. There's still a bunch of things to wrap up, loose ends that
need to be tied up, but I'm hopeful we should be done with the bulk of
the work (at least as far as I am concerned!) by the end of the year.

Team lead

- Worked with sajolida on estimating how much work (dev, UX) it would
take for Tails to take to catch up with anti-censorship tech
(Snowflake, WebTunnel, Meek, Circumvention Settings API). We hope to
get funding to do this work in 2026. And maybe some of it in 2025
  but don't get too excited.

- Moved most Tails Team doc to a new public wiki, to make
collaboration with other teams & PMs smoother. I have plans to go
further on this path but chances are this has to wait until 2025Q1.
Tails Team · Wiki · tails / team · GitLab

- More generally, as a team lead, since July I'm still doing lots of
work to migrate away from Tails' previous setup, but the dust is
  slowly starting to settle.

Cheers,

Hi,

I took 1.5 week off for personal reasons mid-November.

The work time & energy I had left was barely enough to do most of the
usual day-to-day work that's not worth reporting about, hence this
slim report.

User-visible

···

============

I prepared a short talk for the State of the Onion, then recorded it
in highly challenging circumstances. I'm happy with the script,
I think the slides are good ~enough, and the actual delivery has lots
of margin for improvement.

User-invisible

I did the usual amount of KTLO work; nothing worth highlighting
this month.

Team lead

I've been working, together with a number of other Tor folks from my
team and other teams, on a large grant proposal. This was the
opportunity for me to discover the workflows and tooling used by Tor
in this area, and gain some familiarity with it.

Accounting

We've been making some more progress on transitioning away from the
former Tails fiscal sponsorship arrangements into Tails' new nest, the
Tor project.

Cheers,
