Tor Browser had a major crash when opened for 1st time after latest update and now wont shut down!

  • Operating System you are using: win10

  • Tor Browser version: dont know because i cant open it

  • Tor Browser Security Level: i think safest
after update this morning(6/26/25), i started tor,
    i clicked on a bookmark,
    the browser showed ‘not reponding’,
    waited a few seconds,
clicked a few times on browser,
windows said tor not responding asked to shut down?
i click ‘yes’, didnt shut down.
    tried task manager,
    tor wouldnt shut down,
ran ccleaner, it asked to force shut down tor, clicked yes, didnt shut down.
    restarted PC,
tried to start tor browser, tor said tor is already running and asked to be shut down repeatedly tried but it wont shut down.
    now i cant use tor…

  • The Tor log; i dont know how to supply a tor log.

Try this.

I presume a standard vanilla Windows install: e.g. a folder and a “Start Tor Browser” shortcut on the desktop.

Delete the folder. Shut down the machine (not restart). Boot the machine. Whatever is being restarted by your method can’t anymore because it does not now exist.

Download a fresh copy of Tor from this site. Do the signature check. sha256 or something like that.

If you updated on 2025/06/26 then it is version 14.5.4

I can try Windows 10 on a spare machine if needed.

after reading your response this morning(6/27/25) i tried opening tor up again. it opened with no problem. but yesterday evening i was using the PC and left the room, came back and the PC was off. i questioned myself if i shut it down… twice after that, it just shut off while i was actually using it. no process of shutting down, just shut off. the PC’s lights were on. had to hold power button to completely shut it down. did a deep scan with IObit malware fighter last night but dont know what the results were because it was last and had it to shut off when done.

If the lights are on and you had to hold the the power button to shut off then it was not shut down. I define shut off or down as no power. Sounds like sleep mode.

twice after that, it just shut off while i was actually using it

Was this while using Tor or just using. I presume just using.
Sounds like low battery. Never asked: laptop or desktop. If desktop then ignore this line.

I forgot to mention that when using task manager both Tor browser and tor.exe need to be terminated.

So now all is OK?
