Changes

Below are the major changes of the released versions and links to more detailed release notes.

Stable

Today we are releasing 0.4.9.5, the first stable version of the 0.4.9.x series. Among many changes, here are the two major features:

Counter Galois Onion

Clients and relays can now negotiate Counter Galois Onion (CGO) relay cryptography. It provides improved resistance to several types of tagging attacks, as well as better forward secrecy and stronger protection against forgery.

The implemented Tor proposal is 359.

Happy Families

With this feature, relays in a family share a secret “family key” that they use to prove their membership in the family. Once the network has migrated, this will reduce the size of microdescriptor downloads by about 80%, resulting in a significant reduction in bandwidth usage.

The implemented Tor proposal is 321.

Final word

The Debian package is now available at https://deb.torproject.org. As always, please upgrade as soon as possible.

See the release notes below for the full list of bug fixes and features included in this new stable series.

As usual, many thanks to our beloved relay operators and to everyone else who makes this possible! :slightly_smiling_face:
