Do you know from Tor how to mitigate or avoid these scans or it’s impossible to stop this?
Making it possible for users to find a working bridge while hard for censors to get all bridges is one of the hardest problems we face when looking into making it possible to connect to Tor in places where they try to block it. We have to recognize that there are not perfect solutions.
But we are working on several approaches to make it hard to list all bridges:
- From one side we are doing incremental improvements in the existing distributors to make it this kind of attack harder.
- We are working heavily in improving snowflake where this kind of attacks are not very useful, as IPs are ephemeral.
- For the long term we are working on lox that will be a huge step on making those kind of attacks very hard.
We always keep trying new approaches and reevaluating if the current ones make sense. Like for example we found out that captchas are very easy for censors to bypass while very annoying to users, so we are stopping using them to move to other mechanisms.
