I am transitioning from MS Edge to Tor.
During the browser data Import session , I am only presented with Favorites.
Passwords, Auto-fill and history data is not showing and as such I am unable to import these.
I’m not entirely sure if they were imported or not, e.g. password may have been - but none of these are used by Tor Browser, and some are sanitized (wiped on close).
Tor Browser opens in Private Browsing mode (PB mode)
Password manager is disabled due to CAs (cert authorities). The database is there but not used (hence why I said it may have been imported)
PB Mode does not keep history, by design
Auto-fill data likewise is not enabled by Tor Browser
This is to help ensure no “disk” activity. That is, you close the browser and there is no record (e.g. computer forensics) of where you went.
You know that you can proxy through Tor using Edge but have only done it with Firefox.
In Edge in the System and Performance there is an option on the right to open your computer’s proxy settings where there is a manual setup. The IP is 127.0.0.1 port 9150. Of course you start Tor first. Now there is this thing with DNS which Tor does at the exit node.
This DNS would be done locally by an ordinary browser by asking the OS. In Firefox there is an option to use https for DNS instead of the standard UDP by giving it a DNS resolver to use. I did not find this in Edge. I am not even certain if this https DNS would go through the proxy. I suspect NOT. So there is leakage and there may be leakage in other places.
It is not perfect but now you have your Passwords, Auto-fill and history data .
