I’ve quickly become bemused.
Bridges? Onion? I’m at the “wtf are they?” stage.
Can someone point me to a guide/website that explains basics by any chance?

I am on the Tor emailing list and I often receive updates on what’s going on in the Tor community. I never have the faintest idea of what they’re talking about. The email may as well be written in a foreign language. I often wonder if I’m the only thicko who receives these emails. I am definitely in favour of the general principle of private browsing but how that is achieved remains a mystery.
The mailing list is for updates from the Tor Project. Not really intended for learning about Tor, so to speak. If those updates are not useful for you, you can manage your subscription as there should be options to unsubscribe in the emails directly.
Check the documentation as mentioned in my previous comment and that should be helpful to understand the fundamentals of Tor.
