After years of using the Tor browser on my iMac, the browser suddenly won’t open today. I am using MacOS 11.7.10 – which is only a couple of years old.

I tried rebooting my computer. I tried deleting the Tor browser and reinstalling it. I tried rebooting again. None of that helps. The browser simply won’t load.

@Lemur, can you please share if there are any error messages when you try to launch the browser? Also, did you start noticing this behavior after Tor Browser started installing the latest update?

The problem started today – shortly before I wrote my last message. There are no error messages that I can see. I select the icon for “Tor Browser” in my Applications folder; the graphics indicates the application is opening; but the application does not open.

macOS 11, it failed to load ScreenCaptureKit and won’t open.

You have raised the minimum macOS version requirement without declaring it.

14.0.5 still has this in its Info.plist:

	<key>LSMinimumSystemVersion</key>
	<string>10.15.0</string>

Trying to launch it on macOS 10.15.7 generates this error output:

XPCOMGlueLoad error for file /tmp/Tor Browser.app/Contents/MacOS/XUL:
dlopen(/tmp/Tor Browser.app/Contents/MacOS/XUL, 265): Library not loaded: /System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenCaptureKit.framework/Versions/A/ScreenCaptureKit
  Referenced from: /private/tmp/Tor Browser.app/Contents/MacOS/XUL
  Reason: image not found
Couldn't load XPCOM.

A quick web search seems to indicate that the ScreenCaptureKit framework is available in macOS 12.3 and later.

Same promblem after updating to newer version. I’m using MacOS 10.15.7 and Tor 14.0.5 wont start anymore. But I have installed Tor Alpha 14.5a2 and it’s work just fine.

Same issue, 14.0.4 working fine on all machines using MacOS 10.15.7 and 11.07.10 until update to 14.0.5 then all laptops and desktops using these systems no longer open the app. It bounces in the Dock for a few seconds then fails.
Is this the end of this app for all MacOS systems below 12? If it is maybe we should have been given notice? If it was unforeseen it appears it was not adequately tested to that of previous standards, and the compilers need to get their act together?

Firefox 135.0 opens and functions as normal on MacOS 11.7.10, TB 14.0.5 does not open.

The decision was made to temporarily roll back to version 14.0.4 for macOS only, while we work on a fix for this issue.

We are investigating and tracking this bug affecting macOS users on our bug tracker, TB 14.0.5 doesn't work for MacOS users with older OS versions (#43468) · Issues · The Tor Project / Applications / Tor Browser · GitLab, and working on a fix.
In the meantime, please downgrade to Tor Browser 14.0.4:

  1. Uninstall the current installation of Tor Browser
  • Locate your Tor Browser application. The default location is the Applications folder.
  • Move the Tor Browser application to Trash.
  • Go to your ~/Library/Application Support/ folder.
  • Note the Library folder is hidden on newer versions of macOS. To navigate to this folder in Finder, select “Go to Folder…” in the “Go” menu.
  • Go to folder menu option. Then type ~/Library/Application Support/ in the window and click Go.
  • Go to folder window. Locate the TorBrowser-Data folder and move it to Trash.
  • Empty your Trash.

Note that if you did not install Tor Browser in the default location (the Applications folder), then the TorBrowser-Data folder is not located in the ~/Library/Application Support/ folder, but in the same folder where you installed Tor Browser.

  1. Download and install Tor Browser 14.0.4

Thank you !!

Why was this necessary? Was the “update” 14.0.5 not tested on relevant MacOS systems before release? This update incompatibility with systems 10.15.7 and 11.7.10 would have been obvious to anyone doing a reasonable system compatibility check before release, who was paying any attention? I have used TB for over 15 years on multiple systems with no problems, what has changed in your organization? This is a blow to the trust I have had in your abilities while I have been system admin for hundreds of machines.
