Neocities practically unusable from Tor Browser if logging in

Edit: I posted this on General Discussion and it’s since been moved and marked as a bug. I still don’t think this is an issue with the software, I strongly suspect that Neocities is rejecting Tor exit nodes for some pages, for one because this behaviour only started days ago and I wasn’t running automatic updates on Tor Browser. I’m happy the community can see the post, but I do not think it’s a bug, I do not think Tor Browser itself is the cause.

Not a support request, just a discussion (and query if others are experiencing this) but this has gone on for days:

  • only applies to neocities.org (logging in, maintaining website)

  • NOT to [anything].neocities.org including blog.neocities.org which does not mention anything about this- the most recent story is from 2022.

  • has gone on for several days

  • affects more than one version of Tor Browser on more than one computer on more than one operating system.

Basically if you want to read neocities pages you’re fine. Profiles and login are nearly impossible to reach.

I’ve managed to login a couple times but it seems like its been severely throttled for days- I basically cannot use the website except as read-only.

I don’t expect anyone in this community to fix this, I feel it’s most likely on the neocities side. It would be nice if they explained it or their intentions, but either this will let people know how the site is performing (for users, not readers) with Tor or let them say it’s working for them, though I would be surprised if it was.

Oh and yes- the pages that don’t load with Tor Browser WILL load instantly without it. This only affects Tor users, and will not affect most people browsing either way (except profiles.)

I don’t think it will let me edit the post because it’s too old now, edit just shows history so I will update with a reply.

After a week of checking, I was finally able to login and at least grab a backup of my website as a zip. I was going to do more, though I am still unable to access the site while logged in, or access the pages I was having trouble accessing- including the main page.

That hasn’t really changed- I believe that Tor nodes are being blocked, and a few new ones might let me get to those pages for a few minutes- it’s been a week since I could reliably login or change anything, there’s still no word about this on the Neocities blog, I believe they are just going to stop letting Tor users login and edit.

There isn’t a lot of guesswork going into that assumption, I’ve been thoroughly testing what I think I know. If this were solved, I would mark it as such. But really I think this is how it’s going to be- people who want a free, Tor-friendly webhost will have to look elsewhere.

I’ve used Neocities for years, but it really looks like it’s time to move to another host. Feel free to suggest one, though you would do better to create or reply to another topic about Tor-friendly webhosts. I would also consider contacting Neocities, but guess what pages tell you how to do that? In my experience, the owner is not good about getting back to people anyway. Support is minimal, and this sort of thing is typical. I don’t really have more to say about this, unless they stop blocking Tor users from editing their websites.
