Any chance to get mapping tools like openstreetmaps or similar on TailsOS Debian repos?
What do you mean by “mapping tools”?
OpenStreetMap is a database of geographical information. On top of it are built many different tools, e.g. navigation systems (such as CoMaps), route planners (OSRM), and software to contribute to the database itself (JOSM). Whether they may be made available on Tails depends heavily (among other criteria) on the kind of tool: for example, I guess it would be almost useless to add a navigation system, whereas a route planners could be interesting.
I think it’d help if you explain why exactly you would like those kind of tools in Tails. What are you currently missing or trying to achieve?
With that information better support can be provided and the dev team can decide if it’d be an improvement to include a specific tool by default.
Your links are helpful, especially the OSRM (https://map.project-osrm.org/) online tool. It is possible
to use this as a binary executable on TailsOS? Is available within the Debian repo?
Please, read NielD’s answer:
Now, about your further questions - I guess OSRM cannot be used as a local binary executable. It was designed to run on a remote server and used through a browser, so reworking it for local use would probably require a complete rewrite. And it is not available in Debian repos.
Note that if you don’t run Debian on your machine, you can still search its repos through Debian Packages.
Debian packages are searchable on TailsOS. I am going to assume OSRM is not self hostable.
OSRM may be self-hosted, and both the backend and the frontend source repositories include instructions to use through Docker or compile from source. But if you want to self-host something like that, Tails is most probably a bad OS choice - it’s just the wrong use-case.
It’s interesting you mentioned Docker, Podman, etc. because there is no FOSS equivalent to VMWare,
Virtualbox, Podman ,etc. maybe there should be.
Maybe something like Onionshare could be useed for self hosting. It is possible to launch an Onion Service website.
Or would it make more sense to use something different altogether like Kicksecure.
Virtualbox is open-source/foss Oracle VirtualBox · GitHub . The base-package has the GPLv3 license.
You still did not clarify what you’re actually trying to do or achieve. This way it is impossible for anyone to provide you with any valid advice or suggestions.
The only reason I am still taking time to write a reply is because I value your desire for anonymity and privacy and would hate to see you doing things which might compromise you when exercising the basic human right for privacy.
To be blunt, I derive from your posts that you currently lack the knowledge to execute advanced operations while remaining anonymous - which is no problem of course, we are here to help you and to learn from each other.
But without knowing what your goals are it is impossible to give any valid consultancy. So please provide more information. I fear, and am pretty sure, no one will take the time to reply to this post without more information.
