Is it possible to add extension to Tor Browser that blocks ads?

Tor Browser only has the NoScript extension …

Excuse me …

Is it possible to add extension to Tor Browser that blocks ads ?

Recommended? No. Installing an extension is very likely going to alter your browser fingerprint.
Possible? Yes. Steps to install such a extension are pretty much the same as on Firefox.

Also to note: Integration of uBlock Origin with Tor Browser is currently under investigation for browser fingerprinting concerns and other factors. See, uBlock Origin Integration Investigation (#43365) · Issues · The Tor Project / Applications / Tor Browser · GitLab

Not say that users install themselves …

Instead , want Tor Browser to integrate with ad-blocking extensions …

For example , AdGuard or uBlock Origin …

@ebanam, I note that the uBlock Origin Integration Investigation issue you link to is still tagged with “15.0 stable”. AFAICT none of the 15.0 alpha versions of Tor Browser have so far included uBlock Origin. Is the inclusion of uBlock Origin still scheduled for release with 15.0? Many thanks.

Then you will get into the argument of which is the best to use. If there are x number of ad-blockers then people will express that many opinions of which is the best. Eventually someone will want the option to use their choice instead of what is chosen. Tor is for anonymity, not security. In non-Tor browsers I use EFF.

@ioc2e31 If you are just looking for a solution for yourself, you can consider a DNS based one such as Pihole.

I, too, would like for uBlock Origin to be integrated into Tor Browser.

With that being said, I wonder if a filtering DNS solution, for example, Pi-hole, would alter the browser fingerprint similar to uBlock Origin. My guess is that each one of these would create a unique browser fingerprint:

  1. Tor Browser (no add-ons or DNS filtering)
  2. Tor Browser with uBlock Origin
  3. Tor Browser with Pi-hole
  4. Tor Browser with uBlock Origin and Pi-hole
  5. Any of the above with additional, non-default blocklists added

Some of the additional blocklists are very useful. Some remove annoyances, and some are required for security.

I am reaching the point with browser security that I would rather block EVERYTHING by default, and whitelist only the assets/elements that I wish to use.

Welcome on board with NoScript’s original philosophy

As the assignee of the investigation issue (https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/applications/tor-browser/-/issues/43365), I’ve optimistically asked to keep it in the 15.0 milestone and indeed we’ve reached some consensus there on how to proceed, but I can make no promise about the actual implementation: a final decision will likely come next week, since we’re wrapping up the alpha cycle.
