How to upgrade tor relay?

Hello, ive been running my tor relay for a good month now. Nyx is now saying my tor version is obsolete. How can I upgrade the relay safely without breaking anything? Im on debian 12

Yes you definitely should update as soon as possible, security issues have been found in versions prior to the latest, 0.4.8.20 .

You probably tried to upgrade using the apt package manager (which is a good idea), but on Debian the default repositories avoid distributing cutting-edge software, tor included.

What you should do (official guides by the Tor Project here and here) is:

  • add the Tor Project repository to the sources used by apt
  • enable automatic software updates

This way you’ll automatically get the latest tor binary as soon as it gets distributed. :grinning_face:

Once you’ve added the custom apt repository, you can upgrade with the usual apt update && apt upgrade
