I have a MacBook Air on which I installed VirtualBox and then tried to install the Tor Browser. However, I am getting the error: “Tor Browser requires a CPU with SSE2 support. Exiting.” Could someone please help me resolve this issue? Thank you in advance.
As far as I know, only x86 processors support SSE2, did you run the x86 versions of Tor Browser and VirtualBox on a MacBook with an Apple Silicon SoC?
I installed tor-browser-linux-x86_64-15.0a2.tar.xz and ran the command uname -m in the Kali terminal, which returned aarch64. Could you please guide me if there is a workaround or if I am making a mistake? Thank you.
There is no official Linux aarch64 build of tor browser, do you mind using tor browser on macOS? I don’t know if VirtualBox x86_64 works on MacBooks with Apple Silicon SoCs. What is your host OS ( where VirtualBox was running )?

I appreciate the clarification about the lack of an official Linux aarch64 build, and I also understand that it’s still uncertain whether VirtualBox x86_64 works properly on MacBooks with Apple Silicon SoCs.
On the host machine, I’ll try running Tor Browser directly and hopefully that should work without any issues. For the guest OS, I realize it may take more time, but until a solution is found, I’ll probably keep making mistakes — and in the process, learning new things.
If you don’t mind, could you also guide me on where to find good study material to better understand these topics? Any recommendations for reliable learning sites would mean a lot.

I found official Linux aarch64 build of tor browser nightly, but tor browser nightly may be more unstable.

hi @learn , I’ve been using the Tor Browser on macOS with an Silicon M2 laptop for a year, and everything has worked very well so far. @Protium_serratum Yes VirtualBox now works well on silicon macOS. I just reproduced the error @learn mentioned, and indeed, I’m getting the exact same message. “Tor Browser requires a CPU with SSE2 support. Exiting.” .
The TB Nightly build works on VirtualBox with Ubuntu 24.04 running on this M2 Mac. However, I strongly recommend using the stable version directly on macOS. I’ve attached a screenshot of VirtualBox running on the M2 Apple Computer:
