I am on Dell Notebook 7490 with windows 11 23H2, Tor 15.0.17 and Standard Security level.
Connection works fine when launching Tor. I close the lid of my notebook at night.
When I open the lid and wake up the computer that had Tor running is of course open. However, it is not connected to the Tor network and no website can be reached. I need to close Tor and launch it to start the connection process. This works fine.
Is there a way to start the connection process without restarting Tor?
Whatever the reason, here is the experiment I ran.
Started Tor and made sure I had a connection by coming here.
Disconnected the Ethernet connection while viewing the TCP connections. I waited until tor.exe dropped all connections other than localhost. This simulated your sleep.
I reconnected the internet while still viewing the TCP connections. After a while I see tor.exe making connections to external IP addresses then try this forum again with success.
I did not time that “while” I mentioned but it was a lot more than the ~10 seconds (>30 seconds) it takes to start Tor from the link on the desktop. So the solution is to wait a “while” until Tor wakes up, notices it has no circuit, then creates one.
My Tor is set to connect automatically as I imagine yours is also. Win11 Tor 15.0.17
That 10 seconds is a bit exaggerated. It is more like 5 seconds.
Thank you for carrying out that test. I didn’t think of viewing the TCP connections. I just noticed that there was no action after waiting for a while. I didn’t know how long to wait for Tor to decide to get connected again.
Just turned on one of my other computers with Tor running before sleep. You are right, Tor does wake up after while and connects.
I have a number of apps running at night that I want to continue with in the morning. So, I don’t turn them off before sleeping because they all work fine after waking. I know that windows is not perfect and needs a reboot sometimes. Some of my apps require updating and reboot, so I mainly wait for those updates to reboot.
I have just started to use Tor and I’m learning. Thank you again for explaining how Tor works regarding the connection.
