Big increase in Snowflake proxy traffic recently

I just thought I’d share some feedback on the substantial increase in proxy traffic I’m seeing right now. I only recently upgraded my standalone proxy to v2.13.1 and that could be a factor. My proxy runs on my OpenWrt router in unrestricted mode with no capacity limit.

  • Concurrent connections are up from a usual figure of 7 to figures often above 50
  • Throughput has increased to figures consistently above 500KB/s hourly average (download) from generally much lower & much more variable hourly rates
  • Metrics show the largest number of successful connections from the following 4 countries: US, RU, IR, ??
  • Memory usage is peaking at somewhat under 300MB, which is quite manageable for my device

I don’t know how much of the above is as a result of the upgrade. I expected more traffic from Russia, given 2.13.1 circumvents a recent censorship measure the Russian authorities introduced. Iran also seems to have opened its internet somewhat, as I was seeing very few connections from Iran until recently.

Yes, me too.
Has nothing to do with the upgrade. have been at 2.13.1 since it was suggested to upgrade

It’s Iran they just implemented the famous a terminator phrase “I’ll be back”
They are.

Mine are up from 7 to my max 14. Three times the traffic as the previous day.

The internet in Iran was partially reconnected since May 26th: Doug Madory: "Seeing the first signs of a possible internet res…" - Infosec Exchange, but with many websites and online services blocked. So I suspect the snowflake traffic is coming from Iranian users.

Seems so. Metrics now show IR in second place & RU third, in terms of successful connections.

My stats from 2026/05/26 12:09:26 UTC → 2026/05/28 19:32:15 UTC say:

In number of visitors: 01131 IR, 00206 RU, 00034 US, 00022 CN
In time: IR 490 Hrs, RU 94 hrs

This is with -capacity 14 and computed from the logs for sessions opened then closed.
