Add Firefox Translate to Tor Browser

Hi Tor Project Team,

I’m a big supporter of Tor Browser and your amazing efforts to safeguard online privacy and freedom. I have a feature suggestion: could you consider adding Firefox Translate to Tor Browser?

Here’s why I think it would be a great addition:

Firefox Translate operates entirely on the user’s device, keeping data local and private, which aligns seamlessly with Tor’s commitment to anonymity and security.

The web is a global place with countless languages, and built-in translation would make it easier for users to access and enjoy content from anywhere, promoting a more open and inclusive internet.

I’d love to see this in a future release and am happy to discuss further if needed. Thanks for all you do to keep the internet free!

Tor Browser is a modified version of Firefox specifically designed for use with Tor. It still supports Firefox browser add-ons, so the user can always install Firefox Translate extension if they want to.

Tor is mostly focused on anonymity and security; langauge translation is not one of the main goals of the Tor browser, so I doubt your proposal will be popular enough, since not everyone might want this extension installed by default.

Privacy-wise it needs to be considered that, as long as JS is enabled, websites can detect that a translation has been made, and the language of the translation, by reading the new text of the page.

Ditto.

AFAICT Firefox Translate was disabled pending an audit (impact on browser fingerprint etc.) subject to review and possible re-enabling in the future. The history of discussion on this topic seems to go back over a year and the decision to disable it appears to have been taken 10 months ago.

I’d also like to see this feature re-enabled if it can be done in such a way that it does not compromise privacy and anonymity. It would certainly be preferable to routing translation requests through a cloud service like Google. Perhaps one of the TB devs could provide a very brief summary of the current status of this issue and any planned milestones. I’d be happy to contribute my own time and resources (testing/test builds) to help progress this, if it would help.
