I’ve tried different bridges, different VPNs, different websites, and so on, but the video rarely plays properly. Meanwhile, in Brave Tor, the same websites play perfectly, even with the same bridges and VPN. This started happening a couple of versions ago. Is this the same for everyone, or just me?
15.0.7 (based on Mozilla Firefox 140.8.0esr) LinuxYouTube videos are fine, the other 95% of sites just have video errors or don’t support HTML5 (or something like that)
Can you provide one or more examples of video links which works in Brave but not Tor Browser, as well as the errors you are seeing? Also, what is your Linux distro?
Please note the following is a known issue with video replay in Tor Browser:
Videos that require Adobe Flash are unavailable. Flash is disabled for security reasons.
Mostly, the errors are “not found,” “not supported,” or simply won’t load. On Android, however, everything works fine.
When using the Tor browser, you can access Reddit, for example, and all videos except YouTube won’t play—this is the simplest test. However, in Tor Brave mode, everything plays.
Linux Kde Plasma 6.5.5 Manjaro Wayland Kernel 6.18.12-1-MANJARO (64-bit)
Can you actually provide an example on a video you can’t play on Tor Browser? I just tried playing a few videos on peertube and rumble, and all of them played just fine, other than clicking to accept security warning from NoScript (since I’m operating under Safer security level) first.
Watch this video https://drive.google.com/file/d/16G0Byo9uKc1mJwRMDh4lxd0uC-6nM9xH/view?usp=sharingMost videos on the internet behave the same way for me.
That video plays fine for me in 15.0.7 on Linux Mint Cinnamon.
The error suggests it may be a codec problem. Here is what Tor Browser says are supported codecs in about:support on my machine:
There are a number of issues related to “manifestIncompatibleCodecsError” in the hls.js code repo, perhaps that will help you debug the problem.
For Reddit, I think it’s due to server-side imposed limit on access from Tor network. When I tried to access Reddit, it first returned HTTP/429 (Too many requests) and only after I tried “New Tor circuit” a few times did it actually load. But after it loaded, videos on it can be played just fine. Reddit is indeed quite trigger happy if the client IP is not that clean, speaking from past experience.
About the angeltales.angellive.ru link: The link initially returned “Connection timed out”, then after refreshing (didn’t even take a new Tor circuit) the video played just fine. I don’t really know what’s happening. Maybe also try reloading a few times? Or check if your local connection broke?
(I can provide the screen recordings in private message if you need.)
Okay, thanks everyone, I’m glad this isn’t massively difficult, maybe I should install tor Flatpak and try watching the video there.
Installing Tor Flatpak helped resolve the issue, and videos started playing normally again. Thanks again everyone!
