Tails OS not booting on lenovo legion laptop

Hello everyone,

I am a bit of a noobie, but im not completely retarded, so i am seeking help about tails os not booting, and i tried downloading tails OS with a usb stick onto the usb stick and when i try boot the OS up on the usb stick that which i have downloaded tails to it gives me this line and i dont know how to bypass it or access it.

the line i get when trying to boot up on the usb stick:

“GNU GRUB version 2.12-9” with a statement

“Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions. To enable less(1)-like paging, “set pager=1”.

the above is followed by a command line: “grub>”.

I have a lenovo legion with a amd ryzen 7000 series which is one of the newest cpu’s aswell as geforce trx nvidia graphic card which is new aswell and i wonder if it has something to do with that?

Help me out here guys i would appreciate it i am not very nerdy when it comes to this so i dont understand all the technical details.

Thanks again!

First, let us start with: (there are 3 questions)
Where did you get the instructions to install and use Tails OS from a USB stick?
What OS is on the USB stick you used when “downloading tails OS with a usb stick onto the usb stick”?
What OS is on the lenovo legion with a amd ryzen 7000 series?

I may not be able to solve your problem. I am not a Tails expert.
I am concentrating on the creation of that USB stick you are booting from as the source of the problem.
I followed the exact instructions to download Tails Tails (7.6.1) from a Windows PC then booted Tails on another much older laptop then yours (10+ years old).

Where did you get the instructions to install and use Tails OS from a USB stick?
From tails.net and I followed the usb instructions in tails. net with this link: Tails - Download and verify (for USB sticks)

What OS is on the USB stick you used when “downloading tails OS with a usb stick onto the usb stick”?

no OS was on the usb i bought the usb fresh. I followed the instructions downloaded tails and rufus. After that i plugged the newly bought fresh usb into my laptopt (first time ever) and tried to flash it with rufus. The according message provided in my first post is what i saw which is: “GNU GRUB version 2.12-9” with a statement

“Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions. To enable less(1)-like paging, “set pager=1”.

What OS is on the lenovo legion with a amd ryzen 7000 series?
Normal windows system i believe. I havent downloaded any other and i bought the laptop with the normal windos OS.

I really appreciate for trying to hhelp me still tho. Please let me know if you can locate a problem in any of these answers provided for the questions you asked and see if there is something im doing wrong.

I also thought about that. I recently thrw my old computer out and now i bought this one which is one of the newest models and has a great cpu 7000 series amd ryzen and nvidia geforce i am wondering if it has something to do with that? because on tails. net it says that amd cpus might not be available to work with tails OS.

Thanks again for the answer!

OK I misunderstood your initial post.

This sounded like you had booted a USB stick and trying to download tails OS onto another USB stick
So you did it like I did.

Did not know this. My tests with Tails OS all used Intel CPUs

Will see if I have an AMD and get back.

Edited later:
Yes I have one. Will test.

I presume this laptop:

I see nothing obvious there

I gave it a try with an old AMD 8300 CPU with an old Nvidia and it did not come up. I see nothing in the docs about NOT working with an AMD CPU. I see warnings about AMD Radeon and Nvidia graphic cards and about gaming laptops which is what you got.

You seem to be in the GRUB loader. I see the same message. I can simulate that situation somehow. Then when I hit ESC at the grub> prompt I get to another screen where I can do F10 or Ctrl-X to continue the boot. Try that and see. I’m not hopeful.

yes that is the laptop!

Let me know if you have tested it with a laptop or pc with amd cpu and see what it says for you

Test done as in above post.
I’m going to redo these test with the new Tails 7.9 image just to see. I was using 7.6

Try hitting ESC at the grub> prompt.

I have results from 2 AMD CPUs

An old AMD FX 8300 with a Nvidia GTX 550 Ti
I can start the USB stick by selecting to boot USB HDD. I get into Gnome and am stuck there with a blue screen, time and a button to power off.

On a AMD Ryzen 9 3900X with just a VGA card
I can boot the stick in either legacy mode or UEFI and Tails comes up in both
In UEFI I get what looks like the Grub boot loader (what you get)
In legacy mode I get the Syslinux boot loader

Maybe you can try to boot the stick in legacy mode just to see.
