Metrics showing bridge is down despite successful connections

The Tor relay directory consistently shows my bridge as down, despite it accepting connections. Also, Tor’s scanner tool gives the following error: dial tcp [bridgeip]:443: i/o timeout.

Bridge 2ED910AD7C5F69D9FFBFDEC623BAB8FF84063D23 advertises:

* obfs4 IPv4: dysfunctional
  Error: timed out waiting for bridge descriptor

Debugging

Despite it showing down:

  • I am able to successfully connect to the bridge with tor browser
  • I’ve confirmed both the obfs4 port and OR port are reachable via nc -vz -w 10 [bridgeip] {obs4port,orport} from my home network as well as two other VPS servers
  • I also have a service that periodically checks connectivity. It has been reporting success just before and after the relay directory gives failure.

I ran a packet capture while running Tor’s scanner tool that’s timing out. The bridge receives the scanner’s SYN and responds with SYN-ACK, but the scanner retransmits the SYN. So I guess it’s not receiving the bridge’s response.

  • (2025) [tor-relays] bridge relay marked as down but I can manually connect to it - #3 by arma

    • LLM summary: ““Roger identifies two possibilities: intermittent resource exhaustion preventing new connections, or a bug in the checking/reporting tools. He leans toward overload because that bridge was heavily used. Your bridge has shown low usage, and your capture shows prompt SYN-ACK responses followed by missing ACKs, so that overload explanation is a weaker fit for your bridge.””
  • (2023) My bridge seems to be offline - #36 by MaoMao

    • LLM summary: “The operator initially suspected the ORPort 80 / obfs4 443 combination because other port combinations worked. But post 36 says that same bridge later appeared online again; it doesn’t identify a fix or prove a port-related bug. Earlier, Tor’s Gus explicitly says obfs4 can use 443, with a random ORPort. Our 37128/443 combination follows that advice.”
  • (2022) [tor-relays] Metrics falsely showing my relay as offline

    • LLM summary: Georg suggests some directory authorities might have trouble reaching the relay even while it remains running. That is conceptually close to owl: reachable from some networks, unreachable from a Tor checking host. However, it concerns an ordinary relay, and the thread provides no confirmed cause.

Summary

  • connectivity from my home and VPS are successful
  • connection from tor browser successful
  • somehow losing ACK response from tor metrics (or it’s not being sent)
  • probably not intermittent hanging from bridge since periodic connections succeed around the same time metrics claim offline

Anyone have any ideas on this? Tor metrics blocking my responses or something?

Hi, what’s your operating system? And can you please share your torrc?

Are you running obfs4 port smaller than 1024? If so, you will need to configure systemd and give obfs4 CAP_NET_BIND_SERVICE capabilities to bind the port with a non-root user.

Thanks for replying.

Operating system is NixOS. obs4 port is 443 and I did set CAP_NET_BIND_SERVICE:

$ systemctl show tor.service -p User -p AmbientCapabilities -p CapabilityBoundingSet -p PrivateUsers
CapabilityBoundingSet=cap_net_bind_service
AmbientCapabilities=cap_net_bind_service
User=tor
PrivateUsers=no

Tor’s scanner tool gives the following error: dial tcp [bridgeip]:443: i/o timeout.

Maybe you already fixed that? I’m seeing this result: TCP port is reachable!.

The red status on Tor Metrics only means that the bridge is not reachable by the directory authority (Serge). It’s a known bug: Reported as offline in metrics, some bridges are online and running (#112) · Issues · The Tor Project / Anti-censorship / Team · GitLab. You can change that by opening port 37128 (your ORPort) in your firewall.

But the real problem here is that rdsys is testing your obfs4 bridge and the status is dysfunctional.

Can you share your tor logs too?

I’m seeing this result: TCP port is reachable!.

This is strange, I’m still seeing it timeout. I wonder if it’s intermittent.

You can change that by opening port 37128 (your ORPort) in your firewall.

I have actually had it open. Here’s how I verified it:

λ › nc -vz -w 10 [bridgeip] 443
Connection to [bridgeip] port 443 [tcp/https] succeeded!
λ › nc -vz -w 10 [bridgeip] 37128

hi there!

torproject.org sysadmin here.

we can’t ping your server.

notice the IP address 38.122.36.59 here: that’s still a Cogent IP address, but my hunch is that it’s the interconnect address between cogent and the bridge provider (which, according to RDAP, is racknerd.com.

I would suggest reaching out to racknerd.com directly with this. Say that the host polyanthum.torproject.org is having trouble reaching the bridge, here are its IP adresses:

polyanthum.torproject.org has address 116.202.120.184
polyanthum.torproject.org has IPv6 address 2a01:4f8:fff0:4f:266:37ff:fef9:f825

I remain available for further debugging.

oh and I forgot to mention: it would be useful to have tcpdump traces of the traffic coming from polyanthum, to see if it reaches your server. It’s possible that Hetzner might be blocking your traffic from returning to polyanthum but before contacting them, I would like confirmation of that first.

on Linux, you should be able to do this with:

tcpdump -c 100 -n host 116.202.120.184 or host 2a01:4f8:fff0:4f:266:37ff:fef9:f825

It won’t show anything if traffic doesn’t reach the bridge, but it will show traffic if traffic does and is blocked on the way back.

I’m keeping a ping running to the bridge for 24h to help debugging this.

Thank you for helping! You are correct that the bridge is on a VPS hosted by racknerd.

I ran the dump you suggested and I am able to see pings:

$ sudo tcpdump -c 100 -n host 116.202.120.184 or host 2a01:4f8:fff0:4f:266:37ff:fef9:f825
tcpdump: verbose output suppressed, use -v[v]... for full protocol decode
listening on ens3, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), snapshot length 262144 bytes
09:43:18.372575 IP 116.202.120.184 > [bridgeip]: ICMP echo request, id 49433, seq 6725, length 64
09:43:18.372614 IP [bridgeip] > 116.202.120.184: ICMP echo reply, id 49433, seq 6725, length 64
09:43:19.396432 IP 116.202.120.184 > [bridgeip]: ICMP echo request, id 49433, seq 6726, length 64
09:43:19.396474 IP [bridgeip] > 116.202.120.184: ICMP echo reply, id 49433, seq 6726, length 64

I actually ran a dump while using the torproject scanner tool. I found that I receive the initial SYN, my bridge responded with SYN-ACK, but I never received an ACK back (you can see the packet logs in the original post).. So I’m guessing the issue is return traffic.

ah thanks, i should have picked on that originally, sorry. i’ll contact hetzner!

Hey folks, sorry for the delay here…

So we contacted hetzner last week, and they requested a mtr from the other end.

From their perspective, nothing is blocked:

From the mtr report you provided, the packets successfully leave the Hetzner network, in fact every hop responds with no loss. Hop 1, 4 and 15 simply don’t answer the probe packets.

Since the IP is reachable externally (https://ping.pe/192.255.230.171), it might be that the return path is broken, or your IP is blacklisted.

@torbird have you tried reaching out with the bridge’s provider?

could you provider mtr output? please provide the output of mtr -c 10 -w polyanthum.torproject.org.

thanks!

@anarcat Here’s mtr logs from bridge to to polyanthum. It looks like packets are lost immediately after leaving racknerd’s internal networks:

I reached out to racknerd. They are requesting mtr logs as well:

From where you are connecting from, please provide us with an MTR directed to your server IP. Please let the MTR run for a minimum of 5 minutes.

Would you mind trying that and providing logs so I can relay them to racknerd?

i’ve also started a ping that will run for 24h now.

Thank you for you help with this @anarcat
