Can Tails 7.0 be run from a DVD?

I have several DVDs at my place of residence. However, they only have a 4.7 GB capacity—below the recommended 8 GB for Tails on a USB. Can Tails still be ran from a DVD in 2025?

You can run Tails from a DVD, but a USB is a better option for various reasons.

  • A DVD is basically burn-once, DVD-RWs aside. Newer version of Tails will need new DVDs.

  • USBs can be used until the flash memory fails. I have USB sticks from 2015 still in use today. If I burnt FreeBSD 10.2 to a CD, the CD would be a paperweight.

  • Many modern PCs lack DVD drives. It’s not just netbooks and MacBook Airs, it’s $2000 i9/Ryzen gaming PCs with high-end GPUs, $500 HP Pavilion laptops, refurbished ThinkPads, and everything in between.

However, the ISO image is useful for virtual machines.
